Karen Timmermann

Karen is a professor at the National Institute of Aquatic Resources at the Technical University of Denmark, DTU, where she teaches coastal environments and biogeochemical modelling.

Her research examines how human activity affects the Danish marine environment. With funding from organisations including the VELUX Foundation, she has studied measures that can help improve environmental conditions in Danish waters.

Karen was recently appointed as a member of the Danish Biodiversity Council, with a particular focus on biodiversity in coastal waters and the open sea. The Council considers how biodiversity can form part of the solutions to Denmark’s marine challenges alongside factors such as legislation and economic considerations.

Karen also has extensive experience advising politicians and public authorities on the evidence base for decisions concerning Denmark’s aquatic environment.
